June 2015 Third National Conference Report by Fr John Thackray

The Third National School Chaplains’ Conference at Liverpool Hope University – June 2015

“…it was a wonderful conference and I can’t wait for the next one!" said one chaplain.

To have been at Liverpool Hope University this June for the Third National School Chaplaincy Conference was to have experienced  something described as "excellent, supportive, vital, timely and personally ‘a bit of a life-saver’”

Of course, I would use these quotes, wouldn't I, since I am a member of the organising committee. But they summarise nicely what I experienced personally. As a long-standing attender of conferences I can honestly say that 2015 was bigger and better than anything before.

It was the quality, as well as the choice, of seminars that left chaplains asking for more seminar slots next time. It was the opportunity to be challenged, stimulated, and energised by a range of speakers who clearly value and understand School chaplaincy that made a lasting impression. And it was the opportunity to worship and pray with fellow school chaplains that undergirded it.

And, perhaps most importantly, even though it meant being away from school in mid-June, the conversations, consolations, and confabulations with fellow chaplains refreshed, renewed, and restored me.

There is no doubt that the presence of chaplains in Jesuit schools, which complemented the already ecumenical awareness of school chaplaincy, enhanced this year's conference. It is very exciting to explore the ever increasing range of models of school chaplaincy. It is very encouraging that there were more maintained schools represented; chaplaincy among younger children is also clearly on the increase, as is the welcome ministry of lay people.

It is impossible to summarise the experience: below is given a list of the speakers and seminar topics.
